Over the years, we have adapted to grow more reliant on the convenience of the internet; so convenient, that someone’s life could change at the single touch of a button. Since opportunities for exploitation have grown more frequent in our digital age, this article will include different types of cybercrimes and share the importance of their awareness and prevention.

Phishing:

Phishing is one of the most common cybercrimes where users are susceptible to severe consequences. Used through emails or text messages, it starts by tempting users with eye-catching awards and prizes in exchange for giving away personal information and clicking on an innocent link. Although these bait links may initially seem harmless, clicking on them reveals how these offers were simply a figment of your imagination. This scam could lead to giving direct access to passwords, credit card details or bank accounts, resulting in severe consequences such as identity theft or financial ruin. As studies report that phishing attacks have increased by 61% in 2022, these attacks become more sophisticated, common and difficult to prevent.

Malware Attacks:

Malware attacks are a lucrative technique used to steal private information using malicious software to gain illegal access to personal networks. Upon clicking a link, you are at risk of exposing your device to viruses that may corrupt your sensitive data. The disruption allows viruses, ransomware, adware, worms and more to enter your device unauthorised. Generated from installing unsecured files, ransom techniques are commonly used to manipulate victims into giving more money.

Social engineering attacks rely on the psychological manipulation of individuals into giving away sensitive data through human interaction. The negative aspect of this is that it can occur without the user’s awareness, as traces of malware can be transferred and concealed. Going unnoticed quite easily, social engineering is one of the most problematic cyber attacks to prevent.

The key reasons behind these cybercrimes are evidently the selfish nature of people and their interest in financial gain, espionage or personal validation. While most hackers are motivated by the incentive of gaining easy money, others may be government officials trying to gain access to confidential information. Nonetheless, some exploiters may simply do it for entertainment purposes or self-validation.

3. Choose strong passwords that are difficult to decode. The more complex your passwords are, the lower your chances of undergoing these attacks.

4. Installing preventative software programs can ensure your computer’s security by providing a firewall, email filtering and antivirus protection. Although people often view these as unimportant, they can prevent malware attacks from pervading your computer system.
